King Pacific Lodge, A Rosewood Resort is an eco friendly resort in the heart of the Canadian wilderness that offers guests the chance to experience outdoor adventure and
to interact with an ancient culture that has stewarded the land for more than 10,000 years.
Corporate Philosophy
Our ecolodge operates on a "triple bottom line" philosophy that goes beyond sustainable tourism, emphasizing a deep respect for the land and its people. Ecotourism vacations in such a
rare and special place can only flourish when guests from around the world share this feeling. The bottom line for King Pacific Lodge is that all components must work together harmoniously for
any one of them to succeed.
Creation of The Great Bear Rainforest
- The Great Bear Rainforest is one of the most significant examples of social responsibility in sustainable tourism and ecotourism vacations in the world. In 2006, a coalition of native
peoples, the British Columbian government and private enterprise took a visionary stance and placed in protection 21 million acres of the world's largest expanse of intact temperate
rainforest to safeguard it for future generations. The creation of the Great Bear Rainforest represents an innovative and unique conservation model. King Pacific Lodge played a pivotal
role in the process of protecting this environmentally sensitive area and continues to steward the Great Bear Rainforest in partnership with the local Gitga'at
community at Hartley Bay.

Patrons of the Rainforest - Volunteer Projects
Guarding the Gifts is a charitable fund that "helps guard the gifts of the Gitga'at Nation and the Great Bear Rainforest - by empowering, challenging and educating people to protect the environment and quality of life for future generations." The Patrons of the Rainforest program provides guests of King Pacific Lodge with an opportunity to participate in conservation and research initiatives developed by Guarding the Gifts in partnership with the Gitga'at First Nation. In exchange for volunteering their time, guests will support ongoing work to preserve the Great Bear Rainforest and make a meaningful contribution to a truly remarkable part of the world.
While assisting local scientists with their research of at risk areas and species, guests will accompany a Gitga'at guide into the field and help with various projects including documenting the presence of wildlife, specifically identifying and recording marine species in the intertidal zone. Guest can also assist with the documentation of humpback whales by photographing the underside of individual tail flukes, which are used by researchers to identify and track the whales.
Guests who chose to participate in the Patrons of the Rainforest project will receive the following items in recognition of their time and effort:
- An autographed copy of The Great Bear Rainforest by author and conservation photographer Ian McAllister.
- Sustainability Tour of the Lodge - A private tour of the behind the scenes areas of the lodge highlighting the initiatives we have undertaken to achieve our status as North America's Leading Green Hotel.
- A donation of $400 will be made by King Pacific Lodge on your behalf to Guarding the Gifts.
